The daylight saving time involve moving rolling the clocks one hour forward during summer and back again during winter. The idea of daylight saving time is to have more daylight during summer as well as to save energy. The idea of DST seems a good one initially and has some benefits as well but many people today don’t think it is necessary anymore. The daylight savings time history dates almost a century ago, and many things have changed over that time.
At first, DST practice was to put the evening light during summer to better use and to save on energy bills. However, the argument doesn’t seem to work anymore. As a matter of fact, many people are growing tired of this practice. This has resulted to end daylight savings time petition.
The DST practice doesn’t seem any better anymore like it was initially. The numerous disadvantages that come with daylight saving time has led to the need to End Daylight Saving Time. The following are some of the reasons why the need to end this practice seems valid.
1. Does not save energy anymore.
Initially, the purpose of daylight saving was to reduce energy costs. Basically, rolling an hour forward in summer give more time to use daylight. Because of this, people can use the extra daylight to work and do their business. This result is less use of artificial light which in turn saves energy bills.
However, there is little or negligible energy saving from DST in the modern society. As a matter of fact, there is more energy use by air conditioning units, TV screens, and computers. These gadgets may even raise the cost of energy. Since the energy saved from DST today is negligible, more people find it necessary to get rid of daylight saving time.
2. People can get sick.
Basically, changing time by as little as one hour disrupts the body clock or the circadian rhythm. Often many people are inconvenienced by the tiredness that arises from daylight saving time. For some people, this change in time may have serious consequences. Some studies have also shown that lacking enough sleep at the beginning of DST have resulted in workplace injuries, miscarriages, and car accidents. Also, the early evening darkness after the daylight saving time has been found to increase the risk of depression. During the start of daylight saving time, heart attack risk has been found to increase.
After DST transition, productivity have also been found to decrease which is a disadvantage to the economy. As a result, DST shortcomings have seen more people concerned about the need to continue with DST. Because of this, there are petitions to end daylight saving time.
